On November 14 2010, I took a session at the Bar camp 9 which was held at the Amrita school of engineering, kollam. It was a wonderful experience for me as it was the first time I was speaking to a bunch of geeks who were experts in their areas of interests. Bar camp basically is a gathering of people who wish to share their works with others who are ready to learn from it. The attendees may not be inclined to the same core, yet they were completely focused on understanding what the world is doing.
I got to meet a lot of people including a person whom I have heard of a lot from my professors, Praseed Pai. He is a genius, I found it rather puzzling, how a person can have such a wide ken of knowledge. The talks were on the projects that the speakers have been working on, mine being on a script that I had submitted to Blender 3D, namely the drop to ground script. The wiki page of my add-on can be found here, http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.5/Py/Scripts/Object/Drop_to_ground.
I started my session by showing a trailer of an open movie that was developed by the Blender Foundation, Sintel. My aim was to show how powerful a software of such minuscule size can get. Then I moved on to give a brief introduction on Blender 3D and the different areas where a contribution is possible. I had been working in the add-ons section, so my expertise was more on Python and the blender scripts. Then I went on to describe how the code worked and also answered some doubts on a particular feature, Ray-casting, that I implemented to achieve the upshot. The script basically allows you to drop some objects onto a certain ground along the z-axis, with or without aligning it to the ground. Then during the climactic sections of the sessions I took the opportunity to explain how one can start development in blender 3D.
Once the session ended I talked to the attendees and was given a good review coupled with advice on how my skills can be improved. Overall I had a wonderful experience which I will cherish forever.
